Biomethane and Biogas

Biomethane is produced by purifying biogas, which results from the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. Although its share in Brazil’s energy matrix is still small, the sector holds strong growth potential, driven by investment in the infrastructure and logistics needed to move production and generate power. Instruments such as the Biogas Credit Guarantee Fund, created by the Brazilian Biogas Association (Abiogás), have encouraged financial institutions to get involved in projects in the sector.

Recent regulatory developments, including action by Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), have brought the legal treatment of biomethane in line with that of natural gas, creating a more stable and predictable environment for investment. Biogas, on the other hand, still lacks specific ANP regulation, which limits its development compared to biomethane.
